Artist, Maker, Designer

Aadhyaa Bhatt is an artist, maker, and designer based between New Delhi and London, working at the intersections of time, history, and culture. Her practice investigates how textiles can carry and communicate these themes, by exploring what it means to make slowly, intentionally, and with awareness of our impact.

Journey

During her undergraduate years at NIFT, Aadhyaa began investigating a central contradiction: how to work as a designer while addressing the fashion industry's role as one of the world's largest contributors to pollution. Rather than step away from the industry, she sought to work within it, to interrogate it through practice. This ironic positioning became the foundation of her artistic inquiry.

In search of a space to realize this vision, she connected with Namrata Bhutoria at Colorashram, a natural dyeing studio in Ahmedabad, India. What began as an internship evolved into a collaborative partnership. Together, they explored how natural dyes and sustainable practices could offer an alternative discourse within fashion. Aadhyaa assisted with organizing Colorashram's and India’s first natural dye festival and led workshops that brought these ideas into community. This experience became transformative, not just in technique, but in understanding.

Practice

Coming from a culture where sustainability is embedded in traditional crafts, Aadhyaa realized she was not discovering something new, but returning to an inheritance. Through her work with khadi cotton, hand-embroidery, and natural dyes, she blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary expression. She spins her own yarns and works primarily with repurposed and natural materials, an approach that shapes both the aesthetic and ecological integrity of her work. This commitment to sustainability is not incidental; it is central to how she thinks and makes.

Her practice is rooted in conversations and exchanges: with materials, with makers, with the communities and histories embedded in textile traditions. By reshaping the discourse between art, design, and cultural narratives, she asks what textiles can tell us about durability, value, and belonging in an era of rapid change.
